Still working on some modular options for my next Mecha Miniature Set. Made with Lancer RPG in mind, with lots of magnetizeable weapon options, so you can customize your mini for every mission.

This ones taking me a bit longer than expected, but I find the additional Detail I was able to add this time is worth it.

Also Sensor-Halo. Love that concept.

Modular Mech project: LBK-LunchPack, lunchboxes progress

From bottom to top: -4G (One great big honking steak) -4H (Balanced diet of porkchop and greenbeans) -4P (Environmentally-conscious vegetable platter)

The circle cutouts are for 3mm diameter x1mm depth magnets. They are press-fit! No glue required, but you can for peace of mind.

Behold! Assembly test with satisfying click sound. Does this count as an Omnimech now?

I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen an omni Hunchback given how common Swayback mods seems to have been in canon. When I found out it got a sequel in the Quasimodo I got all excited but nope, still not omni.

I can't believe I am coming up on the fifth anniversary of starting this project, I had figured I would have something ready and finalized within six months to show you all.

If you're new around here, I am developing a new type modular robotic platform, with hardware and autonomous software, entirely independently (ie, myself) at this time (and, as a "side quest", it's own integrated immutable operating system and systems programming language — I'll get into that at a later date.).

Oh, how much of an idiot novice I was at the time to think this was something doable within a convoluted six month time frame — much less, during a pandemic, and a likely-related near-death complete lung failure/collapse - but we don't really expect that to ever happen.

There is some thought that the metalwork on the project was also a possibly candidate on the lung collapsd, so this is the project that literally *just nearly killed me if that is the case.

The amount of literal blood, sweat, and tears that would be put into this in incredible. I even had an offer to move to Canada to work on this, full-time, at one point, but the pandemic at that time put a damper on travel and immigration, so sadly those plans fell through.

Funny enough, the original design is closer in practice (in the simplest concept) to what I ended up at, not sure what happened between prototypes 3-7, that was kind of crazy.

I remember starting this thinking "I'll build probably three different versions by the end of it" then when I was redesigning for the Mk-II/III, I said "Yeah, it'll probably be ready by the ninth version".

So, here we are, Mk-IX, and it's working beyond my expectations, likely Mk-IX will be something useable before micro-production and more rigorous testing.

The plan is to eventually release a video outlining the project, How it's built, the goals, the history, and possibly open-sourcing the core components before going into production (if we ever make it there).

Just a small update, since it's been quite some time since I spoke about it here.

Honestly unimaginably funny how good Cool Pen is for our mood at the moment. We'll be at university feeling the full effects of the Mental Health Wood Chipper ongoing, rapidly approaching rock bottom, and then we'll get home and look at our Fancy Pen case and it's like that one comic. The one where the endless fog of darkness is instantly dispelled by one seemingly mundane thing. The human brain is a ridiculous machine. omg fountain pens.

Modular synth girl. No programs, no presets. Just an intimate understanding of each of her modules, how they function, how they interact with each other, how they come together as a cohesive unit. To an untrained eye she looks like a mess of encoders, faders, switches, and patch cables. But you know better. You know how to patch together her oscillators, filters, envelopes, and effects and adjust each parameter until she lets out a perfect angelic tone. One which only you know how to make her replicate.

In truth, it was more of a frustration than an actual wound- though the bubbling of paint and rubber both ... definitely didn't make it look pretty. He kept his arm behind his back as he stalked through the Steelhaven, leaving the training deck- and the twins to clean up the mess.

Sparring with those two was always a recipe for disaster. Frankly, even in simulations, they had a tendency to make an absolute mess of things- so he should have been grateful that all he got was a singed right arm and a few dents more than he had previously.

Could have been worse. Could have had his servo melted beyond utility- as it was, it was just difficult to move. Not impossible.

Well.

No, not impossible. He could manage this fine. He'd just wait to find a medbot who could be trusted to keep his trap shut about this. He still had another arm, after all.

I think the fastest way to humanize any kind of robot character is to make them change something about their appearance that they don't like. It shows they care about how others see them and also have a mental image of themself that they'd like to fit. It's absolutely such a TREAT to explore the motivation behind that decision, there is so much fucking potential there, keep in mind that they could probably change out ANYTHING about themself!

Wider hips and legs, a more expressive face, the color of their chassis, the general shape of their body.

I NEED more stories where blocky and utilitarian robots designed for one specific job swap out parts of themself, forgoing that specialization and skill at that one job to be more aligned with their own self image. Give me more military quadrupeds realizing they want to be cute and soft and let their guard down.

Obviously, this goes both ways, some people would kill to be a piece of industrial machinery with only one purpose! Maybe a robot was made with wide hips and an expressive face but they realize they'd rather have a plain expressionless face and that their hourglass figure gives them dysphoria!

Maybe they keep doing what they're doing even despite removing parts of themself which fundamentally helped them do that job because they love that job but don't want it to define their existence.
